Mapping the Myth: The Origin Myth of Chatturmukh (Or the Demise of Kana Deo)
Jan 26, 2022
An exceptionally well written article. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, great job. With regards to the statement where you mentioned that Kana Deo could possibly belong to a earlier/indigenous tribe, that is also very plausible. The same thing can be seen in many other origin myths of different devtas as well. In fact, a related myth from the same region is that of Bhambu Rai who was a terrible indigenous ruler. He was overthrown and killed by a king from the Indian plains with the help of a local deity. Consequently, his Mohra now sits in the rath of Chaturmukh devta which is done to propitiate his spirit (Paap) as it started to torment the local people and the deities as well. Interestingly, Rai surname is used by some indigenous tribes in Nepal which might provide some clue to the question who Bhambu Rai actually was.
